2M Math

Grade 2 Mathematics

Key Understandings

Student outcomes are organized within four strands. They are Number, Patterns and Relations, Shape and Space, Statistics and Probability.

The General outcomes are:

  • Develop number sense
  • Use patterns to describe the world and to solve problems.
  • Represent algebraic expressions in multiple ways.
  • Use direct and indirect measurement to solve problems.
  • Describe the characteristics of 3-D objects and 2-D shapes, and analyze the relationships among them.
  • Collect, display and analyze data to solve problems.

Being able to explain our thinking and how we arrived at a solution, rather than the solution itself, will be our priority. Students will find they are explaining and sharing their strategies a lot in math this year.

Areas of Inquiry

  • Communication: Students must be able to communicate effectively as to how an answer was obtained.
  • Connections: Through connections, students should begin to view it as an integral whole.
  • Estimation and Mental Mathematics: Mental mathematics is the cornerstone of estimation.
  • Problem Solving: Problem Solving is the focus of mathematics.
  • Reasoning: It helps students make sense of math and be logical in their thinking.
  • Technology: It will aid students in solving complex problems.
  • Visualization: Images are useful in describing the physical and mathematical environment.

Assessment:

  • Informal observations
  • Work and test evaluations
  • Observation and anecdotal reporting
  • Participation in activities and discussions

Number Talks

Students will participate in number talks regularly. Number talks include open ended questions, class discussions, and growth through sharing of ideas. Number talks help us to develop deeper mathematical understanding and articulate our thinking using appropriate math vocabulary.

Problem Solving

Students will be exposed to various types of math word problems including addition, subtraction, and open ended problems. Students will be expected to show and explain their strategies for solving problems.

Mathletics

Mathletics allows children to rehearse the concepts that have been covered in class through a variety of assignments. As new concepts are introduced you will see more activities they can do. Mathletics is a program that can be accessed at home as well as school. Look for their login information in the front of their agenda.
