Holiday Message


At this busy time of year, our children need adults to be very patient and calm.  They feel the pressures of “the season” in a different way and we encourage you to model good self-care and keep routines in place as much as possible (getting a good night’s sleep, eating nutritious food, playing outside, getting physical exercise that’s fun, getting lots of hugs, doing belly breaths, etc.).  We wish all of our families joy, happiness and peace over the season.


This month we will be exploring the themes of winter, getting dressed for winter and Holiday traditions by engaging in language rich play activities, songs, rhymes and crafts.  If you have a special tradition that your family would like to share with the class please let Miss Gretchen know and we can find a way to explore this as well.  We like to learn about all our PIP families and their traditions and customs.

Therapist Tips

Occupational Therapy Tip (Miss Katie): Heavy work (movement that involve pushing, pulling, carrying or resistance of some kind) is a great tool to help children who are over-energized calm down and children who are feeling sluggish to become activated. Try incorporating heavy work into outdoor play. Make and push a big snowball, help shovel the walk, pull a friend in a sled, take a walk in the snow in your winter boots.


Physical Therapist Tip (Miss Kathy) : Snow boots and snow pants make a great leg strengthener. Go for a daily walk. Once your child is used to the extra clothing, try deep snow.  If you go tobogganing, encourage your child to walk up the hill rather than pull them every time.


SLP Tip (Miss Allaina) : Many cultures have traditions at this time of year. Talk about the special seasonal additions to your house or in the community. Here are some examples to focus on Christmas: Use prepositions such as “lights on houses”, “presents under the tree”, “stockings over the fireplace” and “food in the oven”. Describe what you see such as “red bows”, “yummy cookies”, “soft snow”. Try to use ‘describing language’ to talk about your family’s seasonal traditions. Winter is also a great time to talk about the clothes we wear when the weather gets colder. Use sequence words (first, then, next), and talk about how we put on our coats first, next our mittens, etc.
